Ogbonna for LB please!
Posted this on the match thread, but it is a real problem position for us that needs sorting quick.

Positionally Masuaku and Cresswell both make the same mistakes tucking in with the CB's when the opposition are attacking leaving massive spaces out on the right wing empty for the opposition attackers to attack get to the byline and cut back where most goals come from. They should be both defending their wing to at least force the wingers inside normall on their worst foot instead of making it easy for them.

Pelle must have told Masuaku not to commit himself so much getting forward because he is worried about his defending, v Man Utd I was screaming at him to get down the wing when there was loads of space but he wouldn't and kept on checking back and inside. Pelle knows Cresswell is the same, so he should give Ogbonna a go until he can buy someone else.

If I'm an opposition manager I'm going to tell my players to attack down the right hand side as that is our weakness. Cresswell and Masuaku can't defend, both very decent going forward, but get caught out getting back when we lose possession.

Fredericks was similar on the other side until Zab came in.

I've been saying since Liverpool, given that we now have the CBs covered Pelle needs to bring Ogbonna in as LB v Spurs. Ogbonna can play LB and is left footed. Crap at going forward, but stability is what we need in that position and he cant be any worse than the other two options.

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
We conceded against Brighton down our right after Yarmalenko lost the ball in the middle of the park, our midfield was nowhere as usual and Zabaleta had gone missing somewhere on the right wing. Are you blaming Masuaku for this?

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
If we are relying mainly on counter attacking goals we cannot go 1 down away especially. As seen yesterday we cannot break down a decent defense and they were counter attacking us

I am all for decent defensively minded left back and Ogbonna fits the bill

You honestly think a clumsy CB is going to be more ‘positionally aware’ at LB?

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
There are left backs and there are left backs Masuaku is no Pearce

Yep. I'm blaming Masuaku as well. As soon as we lost position he realised that he was out of position snd got back into the box. As soon as Diop went across to cover the run, Arthur stood behind Murray and watched him attack the ball instead of getting goal side - he just stood and watched him. The back four should move side to side as a unit

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
What nonsense this is.
As Vexed said, the goal last night was down the right, all the CBs and midfield went over to the right (like school boys) and left a massive space in the centre of our defense with only Masuaku there. Look back at goals conceded this season nearly all from the right or centre.

For me Masuaku is one of our best players, his ball control going forward is excellent and his defending has improved massively, he is definitely the best player we have for left defense.

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
Masuaku is the new whipping boy, been slagged constantly for not being able to defend despite making more tackles than any other defender this season.

Never mind the shit pass from Noble to Yarmolenko who fucked up his control, leaving a gaping hole down the right which stretched out CB’s out of position. It’s all Masuaku’s fault.

Mex Martillo 9:37 Sat Oct 6
Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
Jarza, Vexed described it very well, Yarmolenko lost the ball, Zabaleta was further up the pitch and in no position to defend the right. Noble, Balbuena and then Diop went over to defend the right. Including Zabaleta and Yarmolenko tracking back we had 5 players on the right and just Masuaku trying to get over form the left as fast as he could. Noble did not manage to stop the cross into the centre. Masuaku did not get close enough to Murry. Masuaku was coming in from the left he could not get to the other side of Murry to defend a ball from the right.

The commenter on the highlights I just watched says it all, “Its not even a good delivery, normally that would be cut out, right to the centre of the goal, where are West Hams 2 centre backs, Murry could not miss from there”

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
He's not being used as whipping boy, but out of the back 4 he is weaker link defensively , don't get me wrong I like watching him play. But if we are mainly relying on counter attacks to score goals, if we concede first like we did yesterday we cannot break a team down who are 1 goal

The goal yesterday wasn't solely his fault I agree.

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
To be fair we did break them down, we just missed 2 sitters.

You can't miss easy chances whatever tactics you play.

We just lost a game I think people are over analysing it, even City and the dippers have matches where they can't score.

Mex Martillo 10:01 Sat Oct 6
Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
I think to be fair, both our wing are the weakest parts of the defense. We are asking the wing backs (Zabaleta and Masuaku) to do 2 jobs and their cover (Yarmolenko and Anderson) do not help as much as Rice (and Noble and Obiang) does in the centre. We will conced more goals.

The problem is the attack. We have to break down a solid defense of 8 men. It is not easy, you see Barca and Man City struggling with this every week. We really had a good go and I enjoyed that. We have come a long way to get here it is a great advance, we will find away, it may even need soem new players, but we are on a good course. One thing we must work on are our set pieces, absolutely woeful.

Yeah Anderson got around them twice from memory and the finishing wasn't the best

As Mex mention we have to work on set pieces ,especially free kicks imo

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
I don’t see Ogbonna as left back at all. Masuaku definitely needs to improve defensively and was poor for the goal last night but there has been a massive over reaction on here.

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
Say what you like to defend masuaku fact is he covered ground to get back, diop pointed at murray to say keep on him and then for some stupid reason he just stopped and stood on his own marking nobody.

How the fuck do you defend that?

Re: OGBONNA for LB please!
I think AARON CRESSWELL would likely be a better option than Ogbonna.

Rightly dropped after Wolves, but that won't mean he's consigned to the scrapheap.

Stubbo 4:59 Sat Oct 6
Re: Ogbonna for LB please!
Im not advocating dropping Masuaku, let alone sticking Ogbonna there.

However he was culpable to some extent last night. When Diop leaves Murray he visibly points to and hands off Murray to Masuaku so he can pick up the free man in front of him.

Masuaku then watches as Murray strolls into the middle and scores.

As said it all starts when Yarma gets robbed in the middle, but as someone who has played fullback, when Diop hands off, Masuaku should have been busting a gut to get close to Murray. Simply, he didn't.

Re: Ogbonna for LB please!
Arthur can't defend. Hasn't got a clue. Full stop.

However if you want an attacking full back or wing back then he may give you 1 good game in 3.

How people rate him over Cresswell amazes me.

Re: Ogbonna for LB please!
I would give Cresswell a start now and see if he improves in a team at least playing "better" than it was a little while ago.

Re: Ogbonna for LB please!
masuaku is a terrible left back defensively the reason. he's constantly questioned was shown up last night.

As for most tackles Anderson has made as many according to the stats in today's paper
